The West Loop is another great city neighborhood that emerged from what used to be old industrial buildings in the "pre-Clinton years." Along Halsted Street just west of the Loop there was always Greektown, from the University of Illinois up to Randolph Street. In the 1980's trendy restaurants started appearing on Randolph west of Halsted, in what was traditionally a commercial district for wholesale fruit and fish vendors. Oprah Winfrey was a pioneer when she invested a large sum into her Harpo Studios off Washington Street. Halsted is a main drag for the West Loop. At long last the community got a full-fledged supermarket when one opened on Halsted in a new high-rise.
Nearly all the residences are brick loft structures that have been recently gut rehabbed into upscale condos. One nice amenity for local dwellers is that street parking is amazingly easy to find, even being so close to the Loop financial district. You friends can come visit you easily, if you live in the West Loop!
